How TikTok’s new meditation feature helps teens sleep better

TikTok introduces a mandatory meditation feature for users under 18, starting at 10 p.m., to promote healthier sleep habits by reducing screen time before bed.

TikTok’s latest update, aimed at curbing screen addiction, introduces a forced break after 10 p.m. for users under the age of 18. This new feature, which includes a guided meditation, is designed to offer a respite from the relentless scrolling, providing an opportunity to unwind before bed. The change highlights the increasing concerns over the impact of late-night screen time on the younger generation’s well-being.

Meditation in sleep hours: how it works

The feature, dubbed “Meditation in Sleep Hours,” is currently in a trial phase for a select group of users, but it will soon be rolled out automatically for all under-18 TikTok users. Once the clock strikes 10 p.m., the app will pause the user’s feed, prompting a relaxation exercise. This exercise consists of guided breathing, calming music, and tips to disconnect from screens. If users fail to engage with the first reminder, a full-screen notification appears, ensuring that it’s hard to ignore.

Adults can choose

For adult users, however, the choice is theirs. They have the option to manually activate or deactivate the feature through the app’s Screen Time settings, allowing for greater flexibility. The distinction here is significant—while adults can opt in or out, the feature is mandatory for teens, emphasizing TikTok’s intention to promote healthier habits, especially in the critical pre-sleep hours.

The science behind the decision

TikTok’s move is backed by various clinical studies supporting the negative effects of excessive smartphone use before bedtime. Research has shown that late-night screen time can disrupt sleep quality and increase the prevalence of insomnia, particularly among teens. In contrast, practices like mindfulness meditation have been proven to help relax the body and mind, improving the circadian rhythm and reducing anxiety and stress.

Data and impact: a well-received experiment

During the trial phase, an impressive 98% of the teenagers who participated continued to use the function after the first night. This suggests that the introduction of a calming, guided session before sleep could be more beneficial than expected. With an average daily usage of over 107 minutes, even with the imposed limits, this mindful break may signify a pivotal moment for digital mental health. Is it an ethical initiative or just a well-hidden marketing strategy? Regardless, TikTok’s nights now follow a different rhythm—the rhythm of deep breathing.
