Learning to dj during lunchtime: a Jersey school’s unique initiative

At Janvrin Primary School in Jersey, lunchtime is no longer just a break for food and relaxation; it’s now a unique opportunity for students to explore the world of DJing. This initiative, launched in collaboration with the school’s music coordinator Rebecca Lawrence and local DJ Sam Marks, has engaged over 100 students, allowing them to experience a hands-on, tech-driven approach to music.

The concept behind this DJ workshop is both simple and revolutionary: teaching children that music isn’t confined to traditional instruments or sheet music but can also be a powerful form of digital expression. Using professional mixers and DJ software, the students learned how to mix tracks, manage tempo, and create their own musical atmosphere. Marks explains, “In an era where music technology is evolving constantly, it’s vital to provide young people with the tools to understand and creatively use these technologies.”

Throughout the sessions, some children showed a natural flair for mixing, prompting the selection of a few budding DJs who were given the chance to refine their skills further. Guided by Marks, these students delved deeper into the art of DJing, supported in a setting that was both educational and fun.

Music as a tool for personal growth

The DJ workshop offers more than just an artistic or technological value; it plays an essential educational role as well. According to the creators, the aim isn’t simply to teach how to operate a DJ console but also to boost self-confidence and encourage personal expression.

During the Friday afternoon “disco parties,” children had the chance to perform in front of their classmates, learning to handle the nerves and communicate through music. The experience at Janvrin Primary School serves as an example of how music education can be done innovatively, blending passion, creativity, and technology. It highlights the positive impact of offering children new opportunities for growth and discovery when provided with the right ideas and support.
