New York ties Italy for best pizza in the world 2025’ì

Naples crowns the world’s best pizzerias: I Masanielli in Caserta and New York’s Una Pizza Napoletana share the top spot, with Tokyo and São Paulo close behind.

The scent of freshly baked pizza filled Naples’ historic Teatro Mercadante, where the long-awaited 50 Top Pizza World 2025 ranking was unveiled. The event, curated by Barbara Guerra, Luciano Pignataro, and Albert Sapere, revealed the names of the pizzerias pushing the boundaries of what is arguably the world’s most beloved dish.

A tie at the very top

For the first time in the guide’s history, two pizzerias share the number one spot. In Caserta, Italy, I Masanielli remains the domain of Francesco Martucci, a man often described as an alchemist of flavors. Since 2012, his restaurant has been a laboratory where tradition meets restless innovation. Awards keep piling up, but Martucci insists, “I’m always searching for something new, something authentic.”

Across the Atlantic, in New York City’s Lower East Side, Anthony Mangieri has crafted a temple of his own. His restaurant, Una Pizza Napoletana, is intimate and artistic, centered around its wood-fired oven. Every pizza is a ritual; every fermentation, every bake, borders on the sacred. As many critics note, New York has found its Neapolitan soul in Mangieri’s pies.

Tokyo’s sky-high surprise

In second place sits an unlikely contender: The Pizza Bar on 38th in Tokyo. Perched on the 38th floor of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, with just eight seats, Roman-born chef Daniele Cason serves what he calls an omakase of pizza. Eight slices, each a world of its own, blending Japanese ingredients with Italian tradition. For two years running, it has been named the best in Asia-Pacific — a sign that this is no experiment, but a full-blown revolution.

Brazil steps onto the podium

Third place goes to São Paulo’s Leggera Pizza Napoletana, where chef André Guidon champions lightness as a philosophy. His approach proves that in Brazil, pizza is both heritage and evolution — a story still being written.

Italy dominates, but the world listens

The top ten still tilts heavily Italian, but the international presence has never been stronger. In Milan, Confine – pizza e cantina has reinvented what a pizzeria can be, pairing pies with a wine list that rivals Michelin-starred dining rooms. In Naples, Diego Vitagliano’s meticulous attention to detail recalls the precision of a Swiss watchmaker.

London also claims its space with Napoli on the Road. Run by Michele Pascarella, Europe’s best pizzaiolo in 2023, the restaurant proves that Neapolitan pizza can speak English without losing its accent.

Rome answers back with Seu Pizza Illuminati, where Pier Daniele Seu treats flour selection with scientific rigor and highlights rare, local ingredients. Meanwhile, in small-town San Bonifacio, Simone Padoan’s I Tigli shows that provincial Italy can compete with the metropolises thanks to whole-grain flours and natural fermentation.

Madrid joins the conversation with Baldoria, while Los Angeles surprises with Pizzeria Sei, offering a crust reminiscent of mochi for an almost meditative experience.

Rounding out the top ten is a name well known in the U.S.: Tony Gemignani. His Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in San Francisco is practically an encyclopedia of styles — Neapolitan, Californian, American, Roman — all crafted with the same relentless passion.

The ranking goes far beyond the top ten, stretching across continents and cultures. From Ribalta and L’Industrie Pizzeria in New York, to Robert’s in Chicago, Pizzeria Beddia in Philadelphia, and Truly Pizza in Dana Point, American pizzerias continue to carve out an identity that stands tall alongside Italy’s old guard. Miami, Portland, Jersey City, and even Mineola make appearances, underlining just how far and wide the pizza revolution has spread.
