Hair loss: causes and solutions

Hair loss is a phenomenon that affects men and women of all ages. While losing a few hairs a day is normal, more significant hair loss can be cause for concern.

Before jumping to conclusions, it’s important to understand that hair shedding is a natural part of the hair growth cycle. Every day, we can lose between 50 and 100 hairs without it being a cause for concern. The process is continuous, with new hairs growing to replace those that are lost.

But what are the main causes of excessive hair loss? Let’s explore them together.

Causes of excessive hair loss

Hair loss

When hair loss becomes abnormal, it may signal several underlying factors. Here are the primary causes:

Genetic factors and androgenetic alopecia

Hair loss can primarily be caused by genetic factors. Androgenetic alopecia, the most common form of hair loss, affects mostly men but also, to a lesser extent, women. It is linked to the action of androgen hormones on hair follicles, which over time shrink and stop producing hair.

Stress and emotional factors

Stress has a significant impact on overall health, including hair health. Traumatic events, anxiety, and chronic fatigue can lead to temporary hair loss, known as telogen effluvium, which occurs a few months after a period of intense stress.

Nutritional deficiencies

A diet lacking in essential vitamins and minerals can weaken hair. The most common deficiencies associated with hair loss are those related to iron, zinc, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and protein. Maintaining a balanced diet is crucial to keeping hair strong and healthy.

Hormonal imbalances

Hormones play a crucial role in hair health. Thyroid dysfunction, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and hormonal changes after childbirth or menopause can contribute to hair loss.

Excessive use of chemical treatments

Frequent coloring, bleaching, tight hairstyles, or excessive use of hair straighteners and blow dryers can damage the hair shaft and weaken the follicles, leading to hair loss.

Illnesses and medications

Certain conditions, such as alopecia areata or scalp infections, can cause sudden hair loss. Some medications (chemotherapy drugs, anticoagulants, and antidepressants) can also have hair loss as a side effect.

Hair loss can, therefore, have multiple causes, but in many cases, it is possible to intervene to prevent or limit it. Identifying the root cause and adopting the right strategies is the first step in maintaining healthy hair.
