Sometimes, the most meaningful projects are born from personal and painful experiences. This was the case for Angela Rafuse, who, after the passing of her grandfather, was faced with the decision of what to do with his beloved cat, Mackenzie. Instead of entrusting her to a shelter, Angela made the choice to adopt her. From that moment, she became convinced that others might need a similar service. This conviction led to the creation of My Grandfather’s Cat in 2021, a Canadian initiative designed to help elderly individuals and their pets.
A concrete support for the elderly and their animals
The mission of this organization is simple but vital: to ensure that the dogs and cats of elderly or terminally ill individuals find new homes without having to go through shelters. In just a few years, the project has enabled almost 1,000 animals to begin a new, peaceful life, providing them with stability and affection. But the organization does more than just facilitate adoptions. It has also launched a pet pantry, called My Grandmother’s Pet Pantry, which distributes food and supplies to elderly individuals facing financial difficulties.
The role of veterinarians
One of the most innovative aspects of this initiative is the active involvement of veterinarians specialized in palliative care and animal grief. With their support, new pet owners receive practical advice on how to help their animals manage stress and adjust to changes. These professionals remind us that behaviors such as hiding or refusing to eat can be signs of pain or anxiety. Monitoring weight, appetite, and energy levels is crucial in the initial months following the transition.
Planning responsibly for the future
Another key aspect of the project is encouraging people to plan ahead for the future of their pets. Many elderly individuals think about leaving their pets to children or relatives, but these solutions don’t always work. My Grandfather’s Cat offers a concrete alternative, ensuring transparency and continuity. By sharing detailed information about an animal’s habits and preferences, the transition to a new family becomes much smoother.
A model to export
Today, the association is a point of reference in Canada, but the concept could be replicated anywhere. In an era where pets are increasingly seen as family members, thinking about their future means not only taking care of them but also safeguarding the emotional bonds that accompany us throughout our lives.
