Austrian photographer Daniel Gebhart De Koekkoek has dedicated an entire series of shots to cats, titled “Jumping Cats.” But he didn’t capture them in the usual poses—napping, playing, or strolling in a park. Instead, he immortalized them at the exact moment they leap into the air. This is no simple feat, given the speed and unpredictability of felines.
The idea, the photographer explained, was inspired by an iconic photo of Salvador Dalí, where the artist is captured mid-jump surrounded by cats suspended in midair. This image fascinated him so much that it pushed him to create an equally dynamic and surreal photographic project.
To realize the series, De Koekkoek traveled throughout Vienna and across Austria, spending a full four years completing the work. Each shot demanded hours-long sessions and infinite patience, because his goal wasn’t to photograph cats jumping inside his studio but to catch them in their everyday environment, at the precise moment they took flight.
Despite the incredible perfection of the images, none of the shots were manipulated with editing software like Photoshop, although many believe otherwise. Some even accused him of forcing the cats to jump—an allegation he firmly denied. His photographs reveal reality in its most authentic form, showcasing the extraordinary agility of these fascinating animals.
All that remains is to admire them leaping from the top of a door, onto a sideboard, into the shower—turning home interiors into a playful playground.
